The natural ending to a Tanzania safari. The shift from the dust and drama of the bush to the Indian Ocean coast in a single flight. Stone Town, the coral reefs, the dhow harbour, and the spice groves of the island the Arabs called the Isle of Cloves.
The island most people mean when they say Zanzibar. Stone Town at its centre — a UNESCO World Heritage site of Arab-influenced architecture, carved doorways, narrow alleys, and the Darajani market. The north coast from Kendwa to Nungwi with the finest beaches in the Indian Ocean. The east coast at Paje and Jambiani, where the tide retreats a kilometre across the shallows. The spice plantations of the interior.

The forgotten island. Pemba sits 80 kilometres north of Zanzibar and receives a fraction of visitor numbers. The island is almost entirely forested. The Pemba Channel drops to over 800 metres just offshore, creating extraordinary reef diversity. The coral wall at Manta Point and the tidal channels with fast drift dives make Pemba the destination for serious divers.

Mafia Island Marine Park is the first marine protected area in East Africa. The coral reefs are in significantly better condition than those around Zanzibar or Pemba. From October through February, whale sharks congregate in the shallow waters. The island is small and quiet — the correct choice for clients who prioritise marine life above beach resort amenities.

Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the historic trading centre of the Zanzibar Archipelago. The architecture reflects the island’s position at the centre of the Indian Ocean trade routes — Arab, Persian, Indian, and later Portuguese and British influences layered over centuries. We recommend a minimum of one full night in Stone Town at the start of a Zanzibar extension. The Forodhani waterfront evening market is a genuine cultural experience rather than a tourist performance.
Tell us which island interests you most, how many nights you have, and what you want from the coast component.

The shift from the Serengeti or the Ruaha to Zanzibar is one of the most dramatic single transitions available anywhere in East Africa. The flight takes approximately one hour. In that hour, the landscape changes from golden grassland to turquoise reef-fringed coast. Most clients describe this transition as the ideal ending to a Tanzania circuit.
Stone Town deserves a full night rather than a transit afternoon. The carved wooden doors, some inlaid with brass, are the most photographed element. The Forodhani night market on the seafront is a genuine cultural experience.
The north coast from Kendwa to Nungwi has the finest beaches. The east coast at Paje is different: the tide retreats a kilometre, and the consistent afternoon trade wind creates kitesurfing conditions. We design the island component specifically around what the client wants.

Pemba Island, 80 kilometres north, is the diving destination. The Pemba Channel drops to over 800 metres offshore, creating reef diversity unmatched in the archipelago. It requires a charter flight — which adds cost but subtracts virtually all other tourists.
Mafia Island Marine Park is the oldest marine protected area in East Africa. Between October and February, whale sharks gather in the shallow lagoon in a non-commercial setting that is genuinely rare worldwide.
We design Pemba and Mafia extensions for clients who have been to Zanzibar before or who have a specific marine objective. We handle the island logistics with the same design attention we apply to the safari itself.

The north coast from Nungwi to Kendwa has wide white sand beaches with calm turquoise water. Sheltered from the south-east trade wind, it’s swimmable year-round — the right choice for a classic Indian Ocean beach experience. The east coast at Paje and Jambiani is categorically different. The tide retreats a kilometre, the south-east trade wind makes it the kitesurfing centre of the Indian Ocean, and the smaller properties are closer to the fishing communities. We design the island component specifically around which coast suits your interests. The spice farms of the Zanzibar interior are worth a half-day excursion. The farms produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, and black pepper in quantities that make the island still significant in the global spice trade. The Prison Island excursion — a short dhow crossing to the coral island that now functions as a sanctuary for Aldabra giant tortoises — is genuinely worthwhile for clients with children. The largest individuals are over 150 years old. The timing of the Zanzibar extension matters. The flight is best timed to arrive in Stone Town in the late afternoon, leaving the first evening for the old town before the coastal transfer the following morning. We time the island transition specifically within the circuit design.
